Anatomical points in skull base where pass nerves and vases can be used in the investigation on asymmetry degree of this area. OBJECTIVE: To validate the method of indirect measures for digital pictures and to evaluate the degree of asymmetry from human skull base during growth. METHOD: 176 normal identified human skulls were used, divided by age in the following groups: fetuses, newly born up to one year old, 13 months up to 9 years old, 18 up to 44 years old and 45 up to 100 years old. The inclusion criterion was pathology absence and the good state of the specimens. Starting from a central point: tuberculum pharyngeum, and 4 lateral points: foramen ovale, foramen spinosum, carotid canal and stylomastoid foramen. The measurement was accomplished by digital biometry analyzed with the software Image J after a comparative validation with directed method performed with caliper. Results were presented as asymmetry indexes according to the formula: right side less left side divided by the right side multiplied by one hundred. The data were expressed as percentage of asymmetry. When the results presented negative signs, the left side was larger than the right. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The digital method presented validity and advantages in relation to the direct method with caliper. The skulls in all age groups expressed asymmetry. The smallest asymmetry index was 2,59% and the largest 6,66% they were found in the fetuses group at foramen ovale and carotid canal respectively. In the literature, there are no patterns for defined values of asymmetry in normal skulls. The asymmetry of position of the foramens was verified in the whole sample considered as normal and corresponded to an average index of 4%. In this study were also observed that in most of the measures there was prevalence of the right side over the left side.
