The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of BA supplementation on performance indicators and OS. The study was double blind, randomized, with placebo (PL). Eleven volleyball athletes conducted 5 weeks of training intensification and were evaluated in a subsequent period of 3 weeks of tapering (weeks 5, 6, 7 and 8 through the vertical jump (VJ) (countermovement - CM), training internal load (IL), monotony and questionnaires DALDA and WURSS 21, and weeks 5 and 8 to OS (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances ? TBARS; uric acid; nitrite). The athletes supplemented with BA (n=6) or PL (n=5) during the tapering period (6,4g/day by 3 weeks). In VJ analysis was no difference between groups, but difference was found between week 5 and 8 (P=.031) and effect size (ES) of: 0.945 between week 5 and 6; 0.588 between week 5 and 8 for the BA group VJ in the same periods, demonstrating the effectiveness of supplementation in improving performance. For the OS difference was found (P<.001) between the groups. In relation to ES, the BA supplementation was beneficial for uric acid (BA=0.167 x PL=-0.263), TBARS (BA=1.858 x PL=1.396) and nitrite (BA=1.165 x PL=-1.205). Thus, the supplementation of BA modulates positively the performance and the OS on tapering period in volleyball athletes, can be an important strategy in the sports planning.
