Antioxidants, such as phenolic compounds, are capable of intercepting free radicals generated by cellular metabolism or exogenous sources, preventing intestinal damage and loss of cellular integrity. Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of apple juice on the mechanism of apoptosis during TNBSinduced colitis and an acetic acid in Wistar rats. Methodology: The study was developed from paraffin block analysis, with intestinal biological material of Wistar rats, divided into groups induced with acetic acid and TNBS acid, being treated before and after with apple juice extract. Results: Apple juice extract apparently had a positive influence, reducing the rate of intestinal epithelial apoptosis, especially in relation to the extrinsic pathway. Conclusion: These findings suggest new perspectives for advances in the treatment of IBD, however, further studies are needed to investigate more precisely how this mechanism may be developing.
