Method: To prepare the Musical Auditory Training Program seven interactive DVDs were created. To apply these materials 15 elderly subjects aged over 60 years where selected and divided into three groups with five subjects each: GI control group, without intervention, and two experimental groups (with intervention once a week during seven weeks) – experimental group GIIA and experimental group GIIB. Experimental group GIIA underwent the musical auditory training proposed by the present study and GIIB only listened to classical music. All groups were assessed on week 1 and reassessed on week 9. The assessment was common to all subjects and comprised a self-completion questionnaire and behavioral tests. To assess the results, the statistical study used was variance analysis with repetitive measures and descriptive statistics. Results: 1) Seven DVDs were created, to wit, DVD1 - Figure-Background to instrumental sounds, DVD2 - Figure-Background to sequential sounds, DVD3 – Directed Listening, DVD4 – Sound Duration, DVD5 – Sound Frequency, DVD6 - Rhythm – Temporal Structuring, and DVD7 – Auditory Closure. 2) The results revealed that, in the reassessment, group GIIA presented significantly better results in self-assessment questionnaire and in behavioral tests for memory of non-verbal sounds in four sequences and in recognition threshold of sentences in noise. Conclusion: A Musical Auditory Training Program was created to address hearing skills of temporal processing and selective attention to elderly hearing aid users and the authors detected benefits from training these skills in the studied population.
