    This monograph studies the processes of heritage elapsed on the city of Amparo, located in the hinterland of São Paulo. The period of investigation is the final years of the twentieth century, especially the decade of 1980. The analysis seeks to understand the preservation process occurred in Amparo beyond the memories produced by official heritage bodies, especially the Council of Defense of the Historical, Archaeological, Artistic and Tourism of the State of Sao Paulo - CONDEPHAAT. In this work we can notice four investigative strategies that were taken: I) the collection and analysis of local written sources, which provide subsidies for the comprehension of the reception of this idea; II) the search and treatment of oral records with key actors of the process triggering the heritage, encompassing also the local population, in order to understand by those involved directly what are their memories about the process; and finally, III) the importance of education for the preservation of historical, artistic, cultural and architectural heritage of this city.
