- ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Comparação entre qualidade de visão auto-relatada e acuidade visual em população idosa de baixa renda na cidade de São Paulo(Conselho Brasileiro de Oftalmologia, 2006-02-01) Cinoto, Rafael Werneck [UNIFESP]; Berezovsky, Adriana [UNIFESP]; Belfort, Rubens Junior [UNIFESP]; Salomão, Solange Rios [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)PURPOSE: Self-reported visual function questionnaires are becoming more common in clinical research. The purpose of this study is to evaluate and correlate self-reported visual function assessed by a visual function questionnaire with visual acuity. METHODS: 806 patients aged 60 years and older, who were included in an epidemiological eye study, were interviewed and present visual acuity for near and distance was taken; they also answered a visual function questionnaire. RESULTS: Weak correlations were found between self-reported visual function assessed by a visual function questionnaire and visual acuities for both distance and near. CONCLUSION: Self-reported visual function assessed by a visual function questionnaire did not correspond to visual acuity, nevertheless it can provide important information to the ophthalmologist.

Healthcare professionals may underestimate the impact of the condition on patients' quality of life. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate quality of life using one generic and one disease-specific health-related quality of life instrument; to compare quality of life between the different clinical types of chronic urticaria and to evaluate whether angioedema further impairs quality of life. METHODS: Sixty-two patients with chronic urticaria, who had had signs or symptoms of the disease within the preceding week, were divided into groups according to whether they had ordinary chronic urticaria, physical chronic urticaria or mixed chronic urticaria. RESULTS: There was a predominance of women in this study (72.6%). The mean age of patients was 39.8 years and angioedema was associated with chronic urticaria in 75.8% of cases. Associated angioedema was more commonly found in patients with ordinary chronic urticaria (p=0.011) and in women (p=0.024). With respect to the different clinical types, 32.3% of the patients had ordinary chronic urticaria, 27.4% had physical chronic urticaria and 40.3% had mixed chronic urticaria. Mean overall score for the disease-specific questionnaire was 10.4. In this questionnaire, the most affected domains were symptoms and feelings and daily activities, while the most affected domains in the SF-36 were physical role and vitality. Quality of life was found to be impaired in women, in patients of up to 30 years of age, in those attending a first consultation, in those with higher education levels, in patients who had had the disease for up to one year and in those with angioedema. CONCLUSION: Chronic urticaria affects quality of life, as measured using a disease-specific questionnaire and a generic questionnaire. There was no statistically significant difference between the clinical types. The presence of angioedema impaired patients' quality of life even further. There was a statistically significant correlation between the scores obtained using the disease-specific questionnaire and those obtained using the generic questionnaire.
- ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Perda da voz em professores e não professores(Sociedade Brasileira de Fonoaudiologia, 2009-01-01) Park, Kelly [UNIFESP]; Behlau, Mara [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP); Centro de Estudos da VozPURPOSE: To investigate teachers' and non-teachers' perception regarding the implications of an eventual loss of voice. METHODS: Participated in the study 205 individuals (106 women and 99 men), 105 teachers and 100 non-teachers, with ages varying from 23 to 65 years old. The participants were asked to answer a questionnaire with four questions regarding an eventual loss of vision, hearing, voice and deambulation, and the inferred impact degree (from 0 to 4). RESULTS: For the teachers group, not being able to see caused the most negative impact (mean of 3.8), followed by not being able to walk (mean of 3.7), loss of voice (mean of 3.7) and hearing loss (mean of 3.6). For the non-teachers group, loss of sight also caused the most negative impact (mean of 3.4), followed by not being able to walk (3.0), hearing loss (2.2), and loss of voice (2.0). Regarding the impact of an eventual voice loss, the teachers group indicated negative consequences at work, in their social relationships and in their daily routines. The non-teachers group indicated negative consequences to their daily routine, at work, in their social relationships and in their emotional manifestations. CONCLUSION: The teachers showed to value their voices differently from the non-teachers group. Both groups agreed that voice loss would not bring the most negative consequences. Although teachers noticed more the impact of an eventual loss of voice than non-teachers, the feelings towards this hypothetical situation were similar in both groups.
- ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Preoperative automatic visual behavioural analysis as a tool for intraocular lens choice in cataract surgery(Consel Brasil Oftalmologia, 2015-03-01) Nogueira, Heloisa Neumann; Alves, Monica; Schor, Paulo [UNIFESP]; Pontificia Univ Catolica Campinas PUCCAMP; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)Purpose: Cataract is the main cause of blindness, affecting 18 million people worldwide, with the highest incidence in the population above 50 years of age. Low visual acuity caused by cataract may have a negative impact on patient quality of life. the current treatment is surgery in order to replace the natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL), which can be mono- or multifocal. However, due to potential side effects, IOLs must be carefully chosen to ensure higher patient satisfaction. Thus, studies on the visual behavior of these patients may be an important tool to determine the best type of IOL implantation. This study proposed an anamnestic add-on for optimizing the choice of IOL.Methods: We used a camera that automatically takes pictures, documenting the patient's visual routine in order to obtain additional information about the frequency of distant, intermediate, and near sights. Results: the results indicated an estimated frequency percentage, suggesting that visual analysis of routine photographic records of a patient with cataract may be useful for understanding behavioural gaze and for choosing visual management strategy after cataract surgery, simultaneously stimulating interest for customized IOL manufacturing according to individual needs.
- ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Qualidade de vida dos candidatos a transplante de coração(Sociedade Brasileira de Cirurgia Cardiovascular, 2009-03-01) Helito, Renata Almeida Barros [UNIFESP]; Branco, João Nelson Rodrigues [UNIFESP]; D'Innocenzo, Maria [UNIFESP]; Machado, Regimar Carla [UNIFESP]; Buffolo, Enio [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP); Universidade do Vale do Paraíba Curso de EnfermagemOBJECTIVE: To assess the quality of life of patients with refractory heart failure disease as candidates for heart transplant. METHODS: A transversal, descriptive and prospective study with 18 adult patients, with mean age of 52 years under pre-transplantation outpatient follow-up at educational and public hospital in São Paulo town. The quality of life was assessed by reference to The Medical Outcomes Study 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) generic questionnaire in order to assess the aspects in relation to the function, dysfunction, physical and emotional uneasiness. RESULTS: According to this group, 14 (77.8%) of these patients were male and four (22.2%) female; 14 (77.8%) of them were classified as functional class IV and four (22.2%) as functional class III (New York Heart Association); 17 (94.4%) of them were at stage D and one (5.6%) at stage C (American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology). The mean results obtained from the assessment of SF-36 scales were: functional capacity 38%, pain 49%, health general condition 49%, vitality 39%, social aspects 53%, emotional aspects 43% and mental health 54%. CONCLUSION: The quality of life of patients presenting terminal heart failure is considered to be very bad; it is likely to be worse than in many other more common morbid entities. Both mental and social aspects are least affected, on the other hand the vitality and functional capacity are the most affected.
