The goals of this research are fundamentaly two: the messianic movements and the cangaço. In the first place, it is about keeping up with the intelectual construction of the sertão and its inhabitants through the scientific literature by inseperable binomials such as mysticism and violence, cangaço and fanatism. In order to do this, we tried to contextualize the works and identify the political and intelectual concerns which "moved" the authors to construct, before explaning it, the absolute alterity of the sertão. The second purpose is to realize the logic and the meaning of the fanatics and cangaceiros' actions, trying to give back, as far as possible, the "native point of view". To make that possible, based on recent studies, we intend to retrieve the logic of the practice and discourse of fanatism and cangaço from its symbolic system, defined by codes of honor, faith, power and loyalty.
