- ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Anterior capsule staining using 0.025% trypan blue in cataracts without red reflex(Conselho Brasileiro de Oftalmologia, 2001-08-01) Marback, Eduardo Ferrari [UNIFESP]; Freitas, Lincoln Lemes de [UNIFESP]; Fernandes, Fernanda Pelegrino [UNIFESP]; Branco, Bruno Castelo [UNIFESP]; Belfort, Rubens Junior [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)Purpose: To describe the use of anterior capsule staining in cataracts without red reflex using a 0.025% trypan blue solution. Methods: Six eyes of 6 patients with cataracts without red reflex were submitted to phacoemulsification using a direct injection of 0.2 to 0.5 ml of 0.025% trypan blue in the anterior chamber previous to viscoelastic injection. All patients had an ophthalmologic examination prior to surgery, as well as pre and postoperative corneal endothelial cell count. Results: In all cases the capsule became stained with a faint blue color that enabled an adequate visibility of the flap during the continuous curvilinear anterior capsulotomy (CCC). There were no intra-or postoperative complications. The endothelial cell loss varied between 1.8% and 26.6% (mean 12.8%). Conclusion: Staining the anterior capsule with 0.025% trypan blue solution allows a good visibility of the capsular flap and facilitates the confection of CCC in cataracts without red reflex.
- ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Corantes vitais em cromovitrectomia(Conselho Brasileiro de Oftalmologia, 2009-12-01) Dib, Eduardo [UNIFESP]; Rodrigues, Eduardo Buchele [UNIFESP]; Maia, Maurício [UNIFESP]; Meyer, Carsten H.; Penha, Fernando Marcondes [UNIFESP]; Furlani, Bruno de Albuquerque [UNIFESP]; Costa, Elaine de Paula Fiod [UNIFESP]; Farah, Michel Eid [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP); University of Bonn Department of OphthalmologyThe aim of this article is to present the current data with regard to the application of vital dyes during vitreoretinal surgery, chromovitrectomy, as well as to overview the current literature regarding the properties of dyes, techniques of application, indications and complications in chromovitrectomy. A large body of published research has recently addressed the toxicity profile of indocyanine green for chromovitrectomy. Experimental data demonstrate dose-dependent toxicity of indocyanine green to various retinal cells. Newer generation vital dyes for chromovitrectomy include trypan blue, patent blue, triamcinolone acetonide, infracyanine green, sodium fluorescein, bromophenol blue, fluorometholone acetate and brilliant blue. Novel instruments may enable a selective painting of preretinal tissues during chromovitrectomy. This review suggests that the field of chromovitrectomy represents an expanding area of research. The first line agents for internal limiting membrane staining in chromovitrectomy are indocyanine green, infracyanine green, and brilliant blue. Patent blue, bromophenol blue and trypan blue arose as outstanding biostains for visualization of epiretinal membranes. Novel dyes available for chromovitrectomy deserve further investigation.
- ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Impregnação inadvertida da cápsula posterior do cristalino com azul de tripano durante a facectomia extracapsular: relato de caso(Conselho Brasileiro de Oftalmologia, 2006-02-01) Marques, Frederico França [UNIFESP]; Soccol, Fábio Medaglia; Marques, Daniela M. V. [UNIFESP]; Rehder, José Ricardo C. L.; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP); Faculdade de Medicina do ABC Departamento de OftalmologiaReport of a complication related to the use of 0.1% trypan blue during capsular staining of the anterior crystalline lens capsule in an extracapsular cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation. The capsular dye was injected using an air-bubble technique, inadvertently, it was done using high pressure dispersing the dye through the zonules leading to a complete losts of red reflex, the following steps of the procedure becoming more difficult after the cataract extraction and causing a temporary disturbance of visual acuity in the postoperative period. In order to avoid this complication, the authors also describe the use of Modified air-bubble technique where dispersive viscoelastic is placed into the iridolenticular space 360° to create a protection barrier.

We describe the use of TB as an alternative vital dye for staining the ocular surface to assess the integrity of superficial cell layers of the cornea and the surface environment. This facilitates the diagnosis of various ocular surface disorders, including screening for dry eye disease (DED) among refractive and cataract patients. TB staining properties are different from fluorescein and both are stable in a solution, so that a double staining technique is introduced.
