Control birds received a sham operation. Four months later the birds were sacrificed and their brains processed for glial fribillary acid protein (GFAP) and neurofilament immunohistochemistry, markers for astrocytes and neurons, respectively. Computer-assisted image analysis was employed for quantification of the immunoreactive labeling in the nucleus rotundus (N.Rt) and the optic tectum (OT) of the birds. An increased number of GFAP immunoreactive astrocytes were found in several subregions of the N.Rt (p .001), as well as in layers 1, 2cd, 3, and 6 of the OT (p .001) of the lesioned animals. Neurofilament immunoreactivity decreased massively in the entire N.Rt of the lesioned birds; however, remaining neurons with healthy aspect showing large cytoplasm and ramified branches were detected mainly in the periphery of the nucleus. in view of the recently described paracrine neurotrophic properties of the activated astrocytes, the data of the present study may suggest a long-lasting neuroglial interaction in regions of the lesioned bird brain far from injury. Such events may trigger neuronal plasticity in remaining brain structures that may lead spontaneous behavior recovery as the one promoted here even after a massive injury.

A.; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)We studied the morphological elements associated with airway and pulmonary tissue responses to capsaicin in mechanically ventilated guinea pigs. Lungs were excised and frozen in liquid nitrogen 3 and 20 min after capsaicin infusion (1 or 100 mu g/kg i.v.). Using image analysis, we obtained contraction index (CI) and peribronchial edema area (CUFF) for both central (C) and peripheral airways (P). We also assessed alveolar size (mean linear intercepts, L-m and tissue distortion (standard deviation of the number of intercepts, SDI). Multiple regression analysis showed significant associations between pulmonary tissue resistance (R-ti and CUFFP (p < 0.001); pulmonary dynamic elastance and SDI (p = 0.002); and airway resistance and CUFFC (p < 0.0001). Our results suggest that increases in R-ti observed in guinea pigs after capsaicin infusion are primarily dependent on changes in the small airways, mainly peribronchiolar edema; the increase in lung elastance is related to distortion of parenchymal tissues; and large airway edema contributes significantly to airway resistance. N.; Universidade de São Paulo (USP); Adolfo Lutz Inst; Northwestern Univ; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP); Postdoctoral Fellowship Univ MinhoObjective: To investigate the possible role of chromatin texture parameters, nuclear morphology, DNA ploidy and clinical functional status in discriminating benign from malignant adrenocortical tumors (ACT). Patients and Methods: Forty-eight cases of clinically benign (n=40) and clinically malignant (n=8) ACT with a minimum of 5-years' follow-up were evaluated for chromatin texture parameters (run length, standard deviation, configurable run length, valley, slope, peak and other 21 Markovian features that describe the distribution of the chromatin in the nucleus), nuclear morphology (nuclear area, nuclear perimeter, nuclear maximum and minumum diameter, nuclear shape), and DNA ploidy. Nuclear parameters were evaluated in Feulgen-stained 5 mu m paraffin-sections analyzed using a CAS 200 image analyzer. Results: Since ACTs present different biological features in children and adults, patients were divided into two groups: children (<= 15 years) and adults (>15 years). In the group of children DNA ploidy presented a marginal significance (p=0.05) in discriminating ACTs. None of the parameters discriminated between malignant and benign ACT in the adult group. Conclusion: ACTs are uncommon and definitive predictive criteria for malignancy remain uncertain, particularly in children. Our data point to DNA content evaluated by image analysis as a new candidate tool for this challenging task. Texture image analysis did not help to differentiate malignant from benign adrenal cortical tumors in children and adults.

The right wing and aculeus of 100 individuals of each species were mounted on microscope slides, and images were captured with a stereomicroscope and light microscope.
