Origami is a Japanese millennial art translated as paper folding. Ori means to fold and gami, paper. From its basic structure, paper is turned in several figures, and this work has been frequently used in hospitals as a lowcost activity that remits us to some legends and stories involving disease recovery. The purpose of this research is to understand the effects of learning the technique of origami and analyze the symbolic representations of the tsuru bird, taking hospitalized patients as subjects. The research had a qualitative, exploratory and descriptive approach, with participation of 19 patients from the cardiology section of Hospital São Paulo, aging between 24 and 65 years old. These patients were invited to learn the technique of origami by making the tsuru bird, being interviewed through questions related to the perceptions and feelings which emerged during the activity. The thematic analysis of the content embraced three stages: pre-analysis: stage for determining the register unit (keyword or phrase), context unit, cuttings, categorization, codification and organization of the theoretical concepts that guided the analysis; material exploration: transformation of the raw data, aiming at reaching the core of text comprehension - after data aggregation, they were categorized by significant themes; obtained results and interpretation: the treatment of the results was carried out according to the thematic analysis technique that emphasizes the meaning instead of statistical inferences. This research achieved the following categories and subcategories as result: Category 1 - The Origami as an access to the meditative state, with subcategories: The meditative state: mandala and ritual on the process of the creation of origami; The sleeping process; The awakening; The inner child; The hymn of pearl: the oneself’s reassertment. Category 2 - Symbolism of the tsuru bird and subcategories: The tsuru bird as a symbol of peace and freedom; The tsuru bird as a symbol of life. Category 3 - The chronic patient in the process of individuation, and subcategories: Talking about the disease and the becoming ill; Searching another sense for life. The basement for the symbolical analysis of the testimonials was the theoretical referential of Jung’s analytical psychology. Thus, the making of origami represented for the patients the manifestation of feelings and sensations associated with the meditative state. The tsuru bird was represented as symbol of peace, freedom and life, making the patient look at himself, reflecting about the becoming ill at this moment of his existence. It is considered that the work with origami is a resource that propitiates moments of peace and interiorization for the patient during his hospitalization. This ludic resource creates a space of integration among patient, team, relatives and the hospital environment, which therefore promotes the humanization of health care.
