Purpose: To characterize metalinguistic, expressive and receptive skills, low birth weight, inserted in the municipal school system of Embu das Artes. Methods: Retrospective study, cross-sectional, case-control of 378 schoolchildren from 5 to 9.9 years, of both sexes, the municipal education Embu (SP). Study Group (SG) of 210 schoolchildren born weighing less than 2500g. Control Group (CG) of 168 school children, born with greater weight not exceeding 2500g. Through the Test of Language Competence, the groups were compared with regard to skills: recognizing and verbally interpret sentences containing ambiguous; make inferences from a chain of events; recreate sentences in a given context; and understand figurative language in idiomatic or metaphorical expressions. They were considered variables of interest: age and gender of children; maternal age and education. There were statistical analysis: descriptive to characterize the sample and score per group; Student t test for the comparison between the total scores of each skill / subtest); Chi-square test to compare items for each subtest; and mútipla regression to analyze the intervening variables. Results: GP had lower scores in sentences containing ambiguous when compared to GC. To re-create sentences and understand figurative language, the GP had lower scores than the GC in single items. There were no differences between groups regarding the ability to make inferences. In multiple regression analysis, the GC the child's current age was a predictor for all abilities metalinguistic measures and birth weight was variable predictor in making inferences. In GP, the child's age was a predictor for the interpretation of ambiguities, speech acts and understanding of figurative language and the mother's education factor had a positive influence on inferences Realization skills, Acts of Speech and Language Understanding Figured. The gestational age of 28 to 31 weeks factor interfered negatively in Inferences Realization skills. Conclusions: The GP had lower scores than the GC to ambiguities skills in total and in particular item. To Speech Acts, the GP was worse than the GC in the number of target words, specific. Figured to Understanding the Language, the GP said the wrong particular idiom. The current age of the child factor positive influence in the GC, for all abilities, and GP for interpreting ambiguities. The mother's education factor positive influence in GP for Inferences Realization skills, Acts of Speech and Language Understanding Figured. The gestational age of 28 to 31 weeks factor interfered negatively in Inferences Realization skills.
