This research addresses a deep analysis of the background content for university teaching as well as educational practices used at teaching-learning processes at Physical Therapy (PT) Schools. The key objective is to describe the profile of the PT teacher characterized by: i) age; ii) experiencing time of teaching at the university; iii) educational background in university teaching; iv) identification, description and analyses of the educational practices used in daily pedagogical activities. The present work has a qualitative nature and was carried out with PT teachers at private and public universities in the cities of São Paulo and Santos. Applied method of collecting information was a questionnaire with open and closed questions, while data analysis was based on content and thematic investigation. The units of meaning were selected according to the research objectives, from which the following thematic nuclei were extracted: (1) PT teachers’ profile; (2) educational background; (3) educational practices used in PT teaching and their relations with teaching learning processes. The results pointed at a predominant female profile, average between 30-40 years old, experience ranging from 11 to 20 years, most of them with a master degree as major titulation. Most of the subjects have 7 to 24 years of teaching experience and started teaching about three years after bachelor’s graduation. Categories emerging from thematic unit educational background were: another teacher as a model, personal and voluntary goals, post-graduating programs (lato and stricto sensu) and daily teaching activities. The research detected a majority of PT teachers with no prior formal education on educational activities having tentatively looked up for another teacher as a model, and personal and voluntary search for improvement during their daily activities. Lack of systematic and reflexive knowledge about pedagogical practices has been identified, which can be seen as a restrictive reason for teachers in mediating and articulating knowledge and students. Prevalence of a teaching model favoring the transmission and building up of information could also be identified.
