The word, taken here as the arena in which values are disputed, is capable of reflecting and refracting different realities. As such, this research is based on Dialogical Discourse Analysis, which understands discourses as an ideological orientation, motivated by a social-historical process that moves meanings based on what they reflect and refract through signs. This work is complemented by categorizing processes imbricated in language processing, in collaboration with Cognitive Linguistics, which integrates the theoretical framework for linguistic-discursive analysis. The aim is to identify the dialogical mechanisms through which the ideological tension around the word reform and the discourses that give it meaning occurs in the news coverage of the pension reform between 2016 and 2019 in Brazil, and 2019 and 2020 in France. French intellectual Éric Hazan classifies the symbolic construction of reform as a mask, and in light of this, we seek to examine the phenomenon of euphemization, which he proposes as a tendency in the linguistic production of postmodernity. In view of this, there is a need to look closely at the neoliberal tendencies that influence the present day, making it possible for two worldviews to emerge in the reports selected for examination: the market worldview, which works on the basis of the economic-monetary condition; and, in opposition, the provisional worldview, which works on the basis of the social welfare condition. Thus, the aim of this research is to describe the verbal materiality that drives the discourses surrounding the pension reform and to verify how these discourses function in the Brazilian and French contexts, fifty years after the period analyzed by Hazan.
