Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate pain and anxiety-related symptoms during IUD insertion in patients with and without nursing emotional support during the procedure. Methods: This is a prospective randomized cohort analytical study. One hundred patients treated at the EPM-UNIFESP Family Planning Clinic who chose the IUD as a contraceptive method were randomize into two groups: with emotional support from the nurse throughout the procedure (research group) and without emotional support (control group). The inclusion criteria were childbearing age women older than 18 years who signed the consent form approved by Ethics Committee. The exclusion criteria were: hypertension, heart and psychiatric diseases and WHO eligibility criteria 3 or 4 for IUD. All participants answered the pre-procedure questionnaire to evaluate their basal health characteristics. The anxiety levels were measured using the Trait Anxiety Scale of the STAI, answered before and 5 minutes after the procedure. The presence or absence of signs of anxiety (sweating and dizziness) and their vital signs were measured before, during and 5 minutes after the procedure. Besides that the participants rated their pain on a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) during and 5 minutes after the procedure. Results: The vital signs, anxiety signs and pain level did not have significant differences during the 3 moments of the procedure between the control group and the research group (p=0,831). Also, there was no significant difference in the anxiety level between the two groups (p=0,290). However, regarding to the need of painkiller after the procedure, there was a positive response of 21.4% in the control group and 41.3% in the research group (p=0.046).Conclusion: Contrary to expectations, the emotional support of the nurse during the procedure did not influence clinical parameters, or did it affect the incidence of pain, sweating, dizziness or anxiety during the IUD insertion procedure. On the other hand, it increases the painkiller use after the procedure.
