Method: Data from 60 patients with prenatal surgical correction of myelomeningocele were compared with data from 18 post-natal patients, regarding the ventricle-hemisphere index, need for ventriculoperitoneal shunt valve placement, lesion level and number of patients. vertebrae. Results: A statistically significant difference was observed between the pre and postnatal groups for the right ventricle-hemisphere index (p <0.0001) and left (p = 0.001) indices. There was a statistically significant difference between the groups in relation to the placement of ventriculoperitoneal shunts (p <0.0001). The majority of neonates from both groups presented lesion level at L3 or below (p = 0.326). Conclusion: The data suggest that correction of prenatal myelomenomycele is associated with lower ventricular-hemispheric indexes and, therefore, reduces the indication of placement of ventriculoperitoneal shunts when compared to the group of postnatal correction.
