Breastfeeding is highly important for the nutrition and overall development of the baby. However, premature newborns who need to stay in the neonatal ICU often face additional challenges due to their physiological immaturity, including their ability to feed adequately. The practice of Non-Nutritive Sucking (NNS) aims to prepare babies for oral feeding and contributes to the development of the stomatognathic system, accelerating the maturation of the sucking process to facilitate the transition to breastfeeding. After the maturation of this reflex, the Transition to Oral Feeding (TOF) begins, with the main focus on breastfeeding, aiming to achieve full oral feeding. The bottle appears as a method of TOF; however, it is believed that bottle-feeding reduces the chances of exclusive breastfeeding after hospital discharge. Nevertheless, cup feeding is the most commonly used TOF method, as it seeks to prevent the baby’s exposure to artificial nipples and facilitates the introduction of breastfeeding while promoting safe feeding. Thus, this study aims to analyze the TOF period, considering the factors that influence this process, investigating the most commonly used utensil (bottle and/or cup), reasons for recommending bottle feeding, and the type of feeding upon speech therapy and/or hospital discharge of babies admitted to the NICU. This is a literature review, in which the search for articles was carried out in the following databases: Brazil Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Google Scholar, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS), and PubMed.
